CHERN's first Training School

‌
‌

‌ Anna-Lupina-Wegener

As Training School Coordinator, I am proudly looking back at CHERN first Training School. The Training School “Computational methods in the research of Contemporary China” was organized on April 28-29, 2022 at the Nordic Institute for Asian Studies at the University of Copenhagen.

Fifteen selected participants from all over Europe attended the training in-person. It was organized by Dr. Outi Luova (WG2&5) and Prof. Duncan McCargo from the Centre for East Asian Studies at the University of Turku, Finland. The two trainers, Prof. Christian Göbel and Prof. Jun Liu, ran their onsite sessions, with two technical assistants, Li-Hsin Chang and Jia Xi, who provided support with codes and the datasets. The two hybrid webinars attracted large audiences both online and onsite.

Besides the research impact, the training school will have a long-term impact; participants who are employed in teaching positions will jointly work on curriculum planning in computational methods for contemporary Chinese studies.

We thank Dr. Outi Luova and Prof. Duncan McCargo for developing and organizing this insightful training in April and for the related online webinar organized in November 2021 on Digital China Research in Social Sciences.

Read the two blogs from the event, and see the recording of the webinars.

CHERN bar: Clash of Emprires?

Ho-fung Hung ‌

The Working Group 4 (Public diplomacy and knowledge production) CHERN bar has been designed to become a regular "discussion forum", i.e. informal platform of exchange. The idea is to select a stimulating (academic or non-academic) publication and talk or even debate about it among us in a relaxed atmosphere.

The last CHERN bar was organized on 9 June 2022, where we discussed prof. Ho-fung Hung's new book Clash of Empires.

CHERN Observer member prof. Ho-fung Hung, lead editor of Asian Perspective, is welcoming articles and special issue proposals from CHERN members. Asian Perspective recently started to publish articles on China-Europe relations.

Ho-Fung invites members of CHERN to share a call for papers for a special issue for the journal currently in preparation: "The Domestic Consequences of China’s Rise within and across Asia: Global Sources, Local Conflicts".

This call invites papers from sociologists, political scientists, economists, anthropologists, geographers, and others with regional expertise on Southeast, South, or Central Asian countries to take a nuanced and comparative look at political and societal contestation as a result of Chinese capital exports (and more generally, Chinas’ rise). The editors' interest includes the ten members of ASEAN, the eight South Asian countries, and the five Central Asian countries. They are especially interested in papers that conduct intra- and inter-regional comparisons, unpack the domestic ramifications of China’s rise or capital exports at the on-the-ground level, and combine qualitative and quantitative methods.
